Wilma Phelps, age, 87, of Avery, passed away, Monday, April 13, 2026, at Focused Care of Clarksville. Wilma was born, February 22, 1939, at home on the Lennox Land, south of Clarksville to J.D. and Maggie Nunn Butler. Wilma married Frankie Lee "Sonny" Phelps on October 19, 1959, he preceded her in death on April 24, 2004. She was also preceded in death by her son, Anthony Phelps, a grandson, Blake Christophersen, brothers, James, Curtis and Larry Butler.
Wilma was a 1957 graduate of Clarksville High School and later East Texas University in Texarkana with an Honors Degree in General Education. In 1979 Wilma started her career at the Avery Independent School District. With over 32 years of employment, Wilma held several positions at the school and in 1994 became the Avery Independent School District's Certified Librarian. For ten years Wilma also drove the dreaded Cedar Creek bus route. She loved flowers, especially Irises! Today they still thrive all around her home. Along with gardening, Wilma was a talented seamstress and a great cook. She will be missed by all.
Survivors include her daughter, Rhonda Phelps Jeans and husband, Shannon of Clarksville, son, Alan Phelps and wife, Judy of Cullman, Alabama, son, Greg Phelps of Avery; grandchildren, Ashley Kelsoe, Brandon Phelps and wife, Amber, Sara Kirkpatrick and husband, Jacob, Matthew Phelps, Bridget Smith and husband, Jared, Lauren Stogsdill and husband, Chase, and Hope Sims and partner, Aero; great grandchildren, Noran, Amelia, Asher, Kacen, Kingston, Addy, Kamora, Kimber, Ian, Elliot, Eislee, BlakeLee, Liliana, Haden, Zane, Weston, Jacob, Kacey and Remi; sisters, Carol Hale Bybee, Sue Butler, and brothers, Arvis and Donald Butler.
Funeral services are 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 17, 2026, in Lindeman Chapel of Clarksville Funeral Home with Rev. Deanie Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in Jackson Cemetery under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Brandon Phelps, Haden McClanahan , Matthew Phelps, Zane Kelsoe, Weston Phelps and J.J. Coleman.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Clarksville Funeral Home.
