Obituary

The family of Susan Jane Hughston, beloved sister, aunt, and friend to all, are saddened to announce her death on July 29, 2023 after a long illness.  Susan was born February 12, 1947 in Clarksville to Eugenia Milan Hughston and Thomas Ross Hughston.  She was raised in Clarksville and graduated from Clarksville High School in 1965, where she played in the band and was also a cheerleader.  She was thrilled to attend Texas Christian University in Fort Worth where she made many lifelong friends and was introduced to Joe T. Garcia’s, which was a favorite place for the rest of her life.  Upon graduation in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree, she spent several years as a medical technologist at Wadley Blood Bank in Dallas. She moved back to her beloved Clarksville in 1980 to work at Red River National Bank as Vice President and Cashier.  In 1990 she joined the business office at the Clarksville Independent School District, from which she retired. She resided in her family home until her death.

The house was the center of many happy events, from hot tamale parties during the annual Bazaar to numerous Christmas holidays with all the trimmings, and a beautifully decorated tree and house.

Susan’s love of her hometown is evidenced by the leadership roles she took in many organizations,  including The Girl Scouts, PRIDE [serving as treasurer since its founding in 1990], Red River County Public Library [trustee for over 40 years], Red River County Historical Society [involved with every Bazaar since the beginning], The Lennox Foundation, Chamber of Commerce [past president], Clarksville Independent School District [trustee], and Clarksville Food Pantry.  In recognition of this service, she was awarded the 2016 George F. Sunkel Award, bestowed annually by the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce.

Her lifelong devotion to McKenzie Memorial United Methodist Church gave her great pleasure and solace, especially as church choir director for over 30 years and as Sunday school teacher and worship leader.

Susan loved sports, especially golf, where she followed in her father and grandfather Hughston’s footsteps as club champion of the Clarksville County Club.  She followed TCU football through thick and thin, and especially delighted in this last year’s triumphal season.  She came from baseball royalty via her grandfather Clyde Milan, a professional player and coach/manager with the Washington Senators.  She was an avid tennis and softball player as well.

She is survived by her sister Margaret [Peggy] Hughston Jackson, brother Milan Hughston [Dennis], niece Marcie Jackson Kolb [Perry], nephew Marc Jackson [Vicky] and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. Her beloved cousins Teela Bowers Hurt and Anne Russell Evetts were always there in health and sickness.  Jim Clark was also a dear friend and advisor.

Perhaps one of the few people about whom one never heard an unkind word, she was known for her generosity, humor, kindness and great sense of humor.  She will be missed by all of those lucky enough to call her friend.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at McKenzie Memorial United Methodist Church with Reverend Mike Rowe officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the McKenzie Memorial United Methodist Church, PRIDE, Red River County Historical Society or Red River County Library.
