Shirley Ann (Shirl) Rogers, 80, of Avery, Texas, passed away on February 8, 2025, with her son by her side.
Born on August 6, 1944, in Annona, Texas, Shirl was the youngest of five children born to Elmer and Lydia Brem. She graduated from Annona High School in 1962, and later moved to Dallas, where she met the love of her life, Tom Rogers, whom she married just six weeks later. After the birth of their son, Tommy, they returned to Red River County where Shirl worked as a hairdresser for 25 years.
Shirl was a devoted wife and mother who loved dancing, gardening, and all of her “critters” that she adopted along the way. Her home was always filled with music, laughter, and the pitter-patter of paws. She rescued countless animals over the years, from dogs and cats to birds and deer, at one point becoming a sanctuary for wounded animals who were found by local game wardens. At times she looked like Snow White as she left the house surrounded by her adoring menagerie of creatures big and small.
However, her biggest love was her family, becoming a devoted caregiver to her husband of 54 years in his final years. Her nurturing spirit made her a second mother to every friend her son Tommy brought home, who lovingly called her “Aunt Shirl.” Tommy remembers no matter where he was or what trouble he was in with his friends, her sleuthing skills were superior if he wasn’t home on time. Her warm and bubbly personality meant that every person she met was a friend, and her smile and spirit would light up a room.
Shirl is survived by her only son, David Thomas Rogers, and his wife, Melissia. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Tom Rogers, and by her four older siblings, Emma Lou (Honey) Meadows, Bill Brem, Buster Brem, and Bobbie Brem. Although we grieve here on Earth, her spirit dances in the heavens with all of her loving family that were waiting there to greet her.
Visitation will be held Friday, February 14, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in Lindeman Chapel of Clarksville Funeral Home, with funeral services thereafter at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Deanie Lambert will officiate. Burial will follow immediately thereafter at the Boxelder Cemetery, Highway 44 South and FM 412 in Annona, Texas 75550.
