Sandra Ayers Obituary

Sandra Lynn Ayers, age 76, passed away peacefully Saturday, October 25, 2025.

Born on November 21, 1948 in Lynwood. California, as the eldest child of the late James Robert "Bob" Carey and Mary Ellen Carey. She was the epitome of a California girl in her youth, spending her days swimming in a pool as part of a competitive synchronized swim team, as a lifeguard, or on the beaches of Southern California. She worked as a key punch operator at a chemical distributor when she met her husband Richard. She caught his eye walking across the docks in a low cut dress, and he thought, "That's the girl for me!"-- and she was. Sandi and Richard celebrated 50 years of marriage this past June. In Whittier, California, they started their family in 1976 with the birth of Ellen Marie, followed by Sarah Jane in 1978.

In the summer of 1982, after the death of her father, Sandi packed up the husband and kids and moved to Detroit, Texas to be near her mother, Mary Ellen (aka Granny). Since Granny was not going to come back to California, Sandi moved her life east. She embraced the Texas lifestyle, learning everything from chickens to show cattle and indulging her girls in any adventure they wanted to try. She spent endless hours cheering from the stands of softball fields, basketball and volleyball courts, and countless late nights making homemade candy or baked goods as the best PTA mom a classroom could ever want.

Endlessly creative, she enjoyed arts and craft projects. Hand-painting wood cutouts and T-shirts in the 80s, ceramics in the 90s, quilting with the church quilting bee, and sewing many Easter dresses and first-day-of-school outfits for herself and the girls. When her brother Jimmy needed work shirts on a budget, out came the sewing machine to save the day. Costumes were never store-bought when she could whip them up in a jiffy. Cooking was an absolute gift of hers. She was always in charge of every holiday feast, and her baked goods were often high-dollar favorites at auctions and the first to disappear from any bake sale table.

She loved animals, caring for every orphan stray as if she were actually their new mom -- nursing kittens, puppies, sick chickens, or whatever else needed her back to health. She welcomed everything from farm animals to a parrot that needed a home, even if he only ever learned to say "Hi Paco" and "SHUT UP!" She adopted a few special dogs in her life: her saint of a golden retriever Angel and sweet Goldie, whom she leaves to look after Richard.

Throughout her life she wore many different hats. She was the butcher at the local Superette Food Store for a very short time, until Mackey Guest had to take her to the ER after a slicing incident that involved her finger instead of the meat. She loved her time working the fabric section at the old Clarksville Walmart, talking to every customer in her department like they were old friends. She adored caring for the kids in the special needs classrooms in Clarksville ISD and later at Everett Elementary in Paris, TX. She was key to the success of Sweet D's Confections while it was in business -- keeping Sweet D himself in line on a daily basis. But of all her jobs in life, being a grandma to Evelyn and Stephen was her absolute favorite. When they arrived, her dream of being a grandmother who got to spoil her grandbabies was fully realized.

Sandi was a long-time member of Martin Memorial Methodist Church, where she found friendship, purpose, and no small amount of laughter She enjoyed quilting with the church group and was always willing to help with meals or project. She had a playful, dry wit, infused with sarcasm, the kind that could diffuse tension, coax a smile, or make a whole room burst into laughter. If she teased you, you knew you were loved. She kept that spark her whole life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Robert and Mary Ellen Carey, and her brother, James " Jimmy" Robert Carey, Jr.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Ayers of Detroit, TX; her daughter Ellen Dash and husband Ben Dash and her grandchildren Evelyn and Stephen Dash of Hurst, TX; her daughter Sarah Wahlberg and husband Eric Wahlberg of Red River County; her sister Bobbie Litton and husband Mike Litton of Detroit, TX; and nephews Bradley Wallace and Clayton Smith of Detroit, TX.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30AM on Friday, October 31, 2025, at Tuggle Springs Cemetery in Negley, TX, with Tamera Marr Ingram officiating. A family visitation will be held an hour prior to services.
