Maxey "Mickey" Russell

January 11, 1932 ~ September 27, 2021 (age 89)

Maxey Kyle “Mickey” Russell, Jr., age 89, of Paris, formerly of Clarksville, passed away, Monday, September 27, 2021, at his residence. Mickey was born, January 11, 1932, in Texarkana, Texas to Maxey Kyle and Kathryn Bass Russell, Sr. His parents; his wife of 57 years, Margaret Sue Sunkel Russell; daughter Marian Russell; his brother, Joe Edd Russell; and his sister, Kathryn, all preceded him in death. Mickey grew up in Annona, working hard and helping his family pick cotton. He played basketball for Annona High School and met his high school sweetheart, Sue Sunkel, in the neighboring town of Clarksville. After high school, he moved to Dallas to work for a while and then joined the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed for several years in Portland, Oregon during the Korean War. He moved back to Clarksville and married Sue and they started a family. Mickey worked for Sue’s father for several years managing Piggly Wiggly stores all over East Texas. During this time, he became a private pilot and started several of his own business ventures. For many years he sold real estate and was known as a local businessman and entrepreneur.

Mickey served as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church for many years, spent time on the golf course and hunting at his ranch in northeast Red River County. After raising their daughter, Marian, he and Sue raised their grandchildren, Tony and Lucy and spent much of their time going to school functions and supporting them in everything they did. Later in life, Mickey served on the board of First Federal Community Bank and continued being active in the community and church.

His wife, Sue passed away in 2012, and he moved to Paris and continued helping raise his great grandchildren the best he could for several more years. He outlived most of his friends and was one of the few left from this generation. He was the definition of a man and continued taking care of his family up until the day he died.

Graveside services are set for 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 1, 2021, at Clarksville Cemetery with Rev. Shannon McGuire officiating. Services are under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.

Survivors include his grandchildren, Anthony Boss and wife, Raquel of Paris and Lucinda Boss of Clarksville; his great grandchildren, Christian, Michael, Damien, Heidi, Alicia, Stephanie, Edith and Anthony, Jr.
