Mae Langford Obituary

Mae Wynelle Shackelford Langford was born in Drumright Oklahoma on March 7, 1926, the only child of William E. and Grace Mae Shackelford. She grew up in East Texas and attended Kilgore College where she was a member of the Kilgore Rangerettes. She then attended and graduated from Scott and White Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. She married Thomas Ray Langford Jr. on December 21, 1947, and together they produced 5 exceptional children and were blessed with 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

The growing family moved from East Texas to Nebraska to Houston, Texas. Houston was their home for 37 years. Wynelle was active in her children’s lives and the church and community. This included stints as an Obstetrical Nurse at St Joseph’s, Hermann, and Methodist hospitals in Houston. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher and was ordained to the office of Ruling Elder. She also served as a Girl Scout leader for her oldest and youngest daughters’ troops. Wynelle also engaged in a variety of hobbies and interests including cake decoration, skeet shooting, macrame, and gardening. She was an avid reader and introduced all her children to the joy of good books.

In retirement, she and Ray built a log cabin on family property in Avery, Texas settling there in 1991. She became an active member at William’s Chapel United Methodist Church where she once again taught Sunday school. She joined a bridge group and found her place in the local community. She was an avid fan of crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, Scrabble, and flower gardening. Wynelle and Ray celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997. When his health began to decline, she cared for him until his death in 2006. As her own health declined, she returned to Houston to take up residence at Clarewood House from September 2015 until her death on August 16, 2022. She was a loving Mother, Grandmother, and Great-grandmother and will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
