Mac Varley Obituary

Jerry Mac Varley was born on July 6, 1936 to Gilbert Herman and Lucille McGuire Varley in Red River County. Proceeding him in death are his parents. He married the former Wanda Storey of English on June 9, 1956, and they recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Together they have 4 children: Vicky, Julie, Val, and Brad.

Mac graduated from Clarksville High School in 1954, then attended East Texas State University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Social Science. He later earned a Master of Education degree from Southeastern Oklahoma University. He was employed for 19 years at Detroit High School where his duties consisted of being an administrative assistant, a coach, and a classroom teacher. He also was an elementary principal at Avery ISD for seven years. He had over 10 years experience as an independent business man. Mac worked seven years as director of Concerted Services for Red River, Lamar, and Delta Counties coordinating state and federal programs for local government entities.

Mac was also engaged in radio-TV broadcasting for a number of years, and he held numerous licenses and certifications. Mac contributed a lifetime of service to his community. Throughout his years, he served as President of the Northeast Texas Solid Waste Management Authority and on the Board of Directors of the Northeast Texas Economic Development District and the Red River County Industrial Foundation. He is a past Secretary-Treasurer of the Northeast Texas Resource Conservation and Development District and a past President of the Red River County Realtors Association. He is a past chairman of the Red River County United Way Fund Drive and the Local Housing Authority and the City Planning Commision of the City of Avery, Texas. He organized and served two years as President of the Avery Chamber of Commerce, and is also a past President of the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce. He also served his community by coaching youth football and baseball. He served two terms as President of the Historic Red River County Chamber of Commerce, and he was serving in his 24th year on the appraisal district board of directors. Most of the 24 years he served as chairman. He also spent many years volunteering at the Clarksville Food Bank.

Survivors include his wife Wanda of Clarksville; 2 daughters, Vicky Kirkendall and husband, Gary of Johns Island, South Carolina and Julie Pease and husband, Russ of Grapevine; 2 sons, Val Varley and wife, Shelly of Clarksville, and Brad Varley of Fort Worth; 1 sister, Betty Starek and husband, David of Grapeland; 9 grandchildren, Heath Lawson and wife, Karen, Ted Lawson, Samuel Pease and wife, Cortney, Simon Pease and wife, Emily, Alysha Bozile and husband, Shawn, Jordan Varley and Ksenia, Breanna Dunbar and husband, Nick, Brooks Varley and wife, Holly, and Shelby Willis and husband, Troy; and 10 great grandchildren.

Funeral services are 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 24, 2021, in Lindeman Chapel of Clarksville Funeral Home with Rev. Don Shovan officiating. Burial will follow in English Cemetery under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends an hour before service time at Clarksville Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Heath Lawson, Ted Lawson, Samuel Pease, Simon Pease, Shawn Bozile, Jordan Varley, Nick Dunbar, Brooks Varley, and Troy Willis.
