Kathryn Underwood

Kathryn Underwood, age 93, of Clarksville, Texas, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2026, to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ. 

Kathryn was born on January 30, 1933, to Olivia Huneke. After dating for two months, she married the love of her life, Billy Underwood. In addition to the Cherry Community in Clarksville, Texas being home, they lived all over the Northeast United States and Canada while Billy worked for several pipeline companies. They had three daughters – Kathy, Nancy and Susan.  The served and were livelong members of the First Presbyterian Church of Clarksville, The Wagon Masters and a couples bridge group where mom always won high – $ .25.

Kathryn was a graduate of Clarksville High School and often told stories of working at the Avalon Theatre on the downtown square.  After working in the Piggly Wiggly bookkeeping office for many years, she served as the Clarksville Independent School District’s Secretary to the Superintendent and retired as the school’s Finance Director.

She was as a busy as ever in her retirement.  She volunteered at East Texas Medical Center as a member of the hospital’s Auxiliary, was a member of the Red Hat Club, sever bridge groups, a 42 club and traveled extensively.  She was a wonderful Grandma and never missed an opportunity for a tea party, nerf wars, soccer games, and later even a rugby game or two.  She never tired of listening to stories of all her Grands many adventures and reading to them.

Then came the Great Grands … Mom was still in her prime when they started coming.  In a list by age there are Brody Burgan, Henry Shoulders, Eli Burgan, Katherine (Katie) Shoulders, Aubrey Duren, Avery Duren and finally Allison Duren.  She was at the births of Henry and Katie and was ready to visit all the others as soon as she could be there! She continued her Grandma traditions with them.

Her family was her pride and joy!  She is survived by her children, Kathy Carter and husband, John, Nancy Duren and husband, Brent, grandchildren Jason Shoulders and wife, Kelly, Brena Burgan and husband, Kevin, Coby Duren and wife, Courtney. And she was especially proud of her great-grands, Henry and Katherine (Katie) Shoulders, Brody and Eli Burgan, Aubrey, Avery, and Allison Duren.  Several cousins from her Huneke family, and caretakers Alice Perry, Keyanna Murphy, Sally Finley, Shirley Farmer, Kris Cunningham and Shirley.

She was preceded in death, by her grandmother, Gram; mother, Olivia Huneke; husband, Billy Underwood; daughter, Susan and grandson, Brody Duren and a lifetime of dear friends.

There will be a celebration of her life on Friday, February 20th, at the First Presbyterian Church in Clarksville at 2:00p.m. with grandson, Coby Duren, officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to her service. Private family graveside services will follow in Stones Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home. 

Pallbearers are Brent Duren, John Carter, Jason Shoulders, Coby Duren, Kevin Burgan, Brody Burgan, Henry Shoulders and Eli Burgan.
