Jan Michie Obituary

Jan Farris Michie, 83, died at 12:20am, Sunday January 9th, 2022 at James L. West Alzheimer’s Care Center in Ft. Worth. She was born on March 30, 1938 in De Kalb, to Otto and Thelma Gay Farris.

She is survived by her only son, Jeff Farris Michie and daughter-in-law Jennifer Michie of Krum, TX; 2 grand children, Sarah Lyn Howman and husband Ryan of Cross Roads, and Jacob Harlan Michie and wife Peyton of Nolanville and 3 bonus grandchildren, Shayna Horton, Jerry Jacob Horton and his wife Kristin, and Caleb Horton; 3 great grandchildren Ava Howman, Emerson Howman, Jeremiah Horton, and 1 baby boy, Howman on the way;  1 sister Gwen McKeel of Las Vegas, Nevada, 1 sister in law, Anne Farris of De Kalb, and 1 brother, Mike Farris and his wife, Donna of De Kalb; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jay Everett Michie of Richardson; her parents, Otto and Thelma Farris of De Kalb; her brother, Guy Wright Farris of De Kalb; and her granddaughter, Hannah Gay Michie of Lewisville.

Jan was a longtime resident of Argyle and a graduate of Texas Tech University in Lubbock. She taught school in Whitehouse and De Kalb. Jan owned and operated an interior decorating business, before pursuing her life-long dream of uniting riders and horses. She was well known and highly accomplished in the equestrian industry, winning numerous awards across the country for cross-country and other equestrian events and for her excellent showmanship.

Jan was known for her keen eye and incredible devotion and generosity towards young riders with limited financial resources. She was a Founding Member and Life Member  of the North Texas Eventing Association as well as an N.T.E.A. Founders Award Recipient. She was an excellent trainer of riders and horses and hosted many events, including young rider summer camps. Her goal was to insure good horsemanship, sportsmanship, and camaraderie was passed on to her students. She was certainly successful and her legacy of integrity and passion will live on through those whose lives she touched.

Graveside services are set for 12:00 noon, Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Springhill Cemetery, north of De Kalb with Meg Witmer Faile officiating. Services are under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Jeff Michie, Alan Burkett, Ryan Howman, Caleb Horton, Charles Michie and  Pete Lichau.
