James Harvey Francis

James “Jim” Harvey Francis passed away peacefully at home in Athens, Texas on June 6, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer — fighting until the very end, unwilling to leave the family he loved so deeply. He was 88 years old.

His journey began in Prescott, Arkansas, and took him through Hooks, Texas, where he met the love of his life, Sarah Grant. They married on September 14, 1956 — best friends for 70 years, logging countless miles across the country together. When dementia later claimed pieces of the woman he loved, Jim became her devoted sole caretaker without hesitation. Those who knew him believe he fought so hard against his own illness because he simply could not bear the thought of leaving her behind.

A lifelong servant, Jim joined the United States Marine Corps at 17 — convincing his mother to sign the permission slip — and served 8 years in the Marine Reserves with quiet pride. He went on to build a celebrated career with Kirsh, retiring in 1996. Throughout his life, wherever Jim and Sarah landed — Arlington, Michigan, Mount Vernon, Lake Whitney, Mansfield, and finally Athens — he found his way into the local Methodist church and gave of himself in whatever way was needed. He was most recently a beloved member of First Methodist Church in Athens, Texas.

Jim Francis never met a stranger. He could leave for a quick errand and return hours later with a lifelong friend. His grandchildren called him “Dad” — a tradition new family members quickly came to understand and embrace. One of his greatest joys was fishing, and he spent many summers patiently untangling lines and retying hooks at Roaring River State Park, doing it cheerfully every ten minutes for grandchildren who somehow always managed to need it. His warmth, his faith, and his genuine love for people were gifts he passed on naturally to his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Francis; son James “Chris” Francis (wife Jodi); daughter Terri Crawford (husband John); his brother, Robert “Bob” Francis and sister-in-law Flo; seven grandchildren: Christopher Francis, John Crawford III, Brandt Frazier, Ashley Powell, Kelli Frazier, Katelyn Jones, and Makenzie Jeffries; eight great-grandchildren; and many cousins and several nieces and nephews who loved him as a second father. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Minnie Francis.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Clarksville Funeral Home, where light finger foods will be served. A Celebration of Life will follow at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at English Cemetery (Williams Chapel Cemetery). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society.

In keeping with Jim’s love of fishing and the outdoors, guests are warmly invited to wear fishing shirts and dress comfortably.

He fought hard to stay. He leaves behind a family that is better for every single day he did.
