Jack Shelby, age 88, of Detroit, passed away, March 29, 2024, at his home. He was the fourth boy born to Pat and Lilly White Shelby on December 20, 1935. Due to his mother’s illness, Jack was raised by his aunt, Fannie White and uncle, Add McDonald. He married Marilyn Trapp on June 18, 1955. Mr. Shelby worked on a roofing crew in Victoria and Port Lavaca. In 1957, they moved to Amarillo where he was employed by Gugenheim Supply, James Dunn Supply and Partex. In 1969, he and a partner opened their own company, V&S Supply Company. In 1972, he moved the family to Detroit and opened Detroit Supply. After 20 years, he sold the business and opened a small engine repair shop which he operated until he retired. He served on the Detroit City Council for 14 years and was a volunteer fireman and served as treasurer. Mr. Shelby was a Christian man who hand many friends. His brothers, Malcolm, Jimmy, Ben, Glenn; grandson, Colt Hoyt; and a son-in-law, Butch Hoyt all preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Shelby of Detroit; son, Alan Shelby and wife, Debbie of Detroit; daughters, Cindy Hoyt of Detroit and Theresa Parham and husband, Mike; two grandsons, Gary Shelby and Stephen Shelby and wife, Chandra; two great grandsons, Devon Shelby and wife, Kayla and Caleb Shelby; and two great -great granddaughters, Elsie and Helen Shelby.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Tuggle Springs Cemetery with Don Leatherwood officiating.
