Inez Childres Johnson, beloved Mama, Nanny and faithful servant of the Lord, passed peacefully on May 16, 2026, at the beautiful age of 98. She was a member of the Lone Star Church where she attended and was baptized at an early age.
Inez was born on July 15, 1927, in Byers, Texas, to John Nowlin Childres and Sally Presley Childres. She grew up with strong family values, a hardworking spirit, and a deep faith that would guide her throughout her life. She graduated from Fulbright, Texas, and later attended Jessie Lee’s Beauty School in Lubbock, Texas, where she began a career that would become both her livelihood and passion.
For 52 years, Inez worked as a hairdresser, touching countless lives with her kindness, warmth, listening ear, and gentle spirit. Through the years, many clients became lifelong friends, and her beauty shop became a place filled with laughter, stories, encouragement, and love.
On October 4, 1947, Inez married the love of her life, James N. Johnson. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and devotion to one another. Their marriage was a beautiful example of enduring love and commitment.
Inez found joy in the simple blessings of life. She treasured family gatherings and the memories made around them. She loved cane pole fishing and spending peaceful hours outdoors enjoying God’s creation. She was especially known for her artistic and crafty talents, creating beautiful things with her hands and sharing them generously with those she loved. Whether through her creativity, her cooking, her laughter, or her prayers, Inez made people feel cared for and welcome.
Above all else, Inez loved the Lord. Her faith was the foundation of her life and was reflected daily in her compassion, humility, strength, and unwavering love for others. She was a role model to all who knew her on how to love the Lord and love each other. As those closest to her would lovingly say, “She was strong in faith and tough as a boot!”
Inez left this world with her family knowing how deeply she loved them, and knowing just as surely how very much she was loved in return.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James N. Johnson; her son, Clyde Nowlin Johnson; brothers, Monroe Smith, Jim Childres, and Carl Childres; sister, Kathrine Peters; and grandson, Shane Wright.
She is survived by her son, James H. Johnson and wife Betty of Blossom, Texas; granddaughter Leslie Wright of Talco, Texas; grandsons Jason Johnson and wife Rachel of Sawyer, Oklahoma, Scott Johnson of Bogata, Texas, and Michael and Amanda Johnson of the Lone Star Community.
She also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren: Alex Wright; Jacob Wright and wife Stormi; Brian Ellis and wife Andria; Destiny Henbest and Jacob Watts; Gus Johnson; Waylon Johnson; and Wyatt Clyde Johnson. She was further blessed with three great-great-grandchildren: Raef Wright, Pyper Watts, and Levee Mae Wright.
Inez also leaves behind a very special friend, Don Shovan, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will cherish her memory always.
Inez’s life was a beautiful testimony of faith, love, resilience, and devotion to family. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
“Her children arise up, and call her blessed.” — Proverbs 31:28 ( a godly, hardworking woman’s greatest earthly reward is the genuine love, respect and vocal appreciation of the family she has selfishly served).
The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 19, 2026 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Clarksville Funeral Home.
Funeral Services are set for 2:00 PM, Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Lone Star Church with Rev. Don Shovan officiating. Burial will follow in Lone Star Cemetery under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.
