Sam Houston Johnson, age 93, of Bogata, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Clarksville Nursing Center.
Houston was born April 27, 1932, in Morris County, Texas, to Sam and Velver Hodge Johnson. A true cowboy at heart, he loved ranching, gardening, and living life with grit, humor, and kindness. He was a faithful member of Aikin Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Above all, Houston treasured his family—raising his children brought him great joy, and his grandchildren were the light of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Margaret Johnson; his daughter, Mitzi Narramore Mabry and ten siblings.
Houston is survived by his children, Wayne Johnson and Amy Deere of Cuthand, Rick Moss and wife Kolleen of Jamestown, North Carolina, Dale Curlee and wife Rhonda of Brazoria, Texas, Kelly Johnson Smith and husband Paul of Clarksville, Marilyn Swanner and husband James of Brazoria, Angela Kramer of Lake Jackson, and Lynn Stephenson and husband Gerald of Avery; his sister, Blonde Smith of Talco; twelve grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to his caregivers, Latoya Jackson, Brianna Ramsey, Kim Burchfield, and Amy Deere, for their loving care.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 2, 2025, from 10:00–11:00 a.m. at Cuthand Church. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Ryan Youngblood officiating. Burial will be in Cuthand Cemetery under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jeff Augustus, Randy Peacock, Shawn Woodall, John Noe, Keith Bedford, and Lee Bedford. Honorary pallbearers are Howard Dewitt, Solan King, and Paul Weaver.
