Betty Jean Sleeper, age 86, of Black Mountain, North Carolina passed away September 26, 2024, in Red River County, Texas. Betty was born in Red River County September 22, 1938, to Mack Louis Brewer and Sybil Marie Alford Brewer. She lived for many years in Las Vegas, Nevada, retiring from Albertson's as head bookkeeper. For the past 30+ years, she has lived in Black Mountain, North Carolina and enjoyed a second career for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services at Black Mountain Center. She retired at the age of 75 in 2013, as Director of House Keeping where she thoroughly enjoyed working with the patients over her 23 year tenure.
Betty loved all things TEXAS including cowboys, country music, especially George Straight and Gene Watson, shopping, mani-pedis, coffee and cigarettes. She was a fixture on the front porch in North Carolina drinking her coffee and smoking cigarettes and will be missed by all the folks passing by. Betty was mentally sharp enjoyed telling the family history and secrets, remembered birthdays and other historical dates and quick to give advice on "what not to do!". She recently returned back to her beloved Texas to complete her cycle of life before taking her heavenly journey to join those who preceded her in death, including her parents, her daughter, Annette Weakley who she lost just a short year ago and her sisters, Maxie Becker and Ann Bachman.
Betty is survived by a son, Walter Lawler of Las Vegas, Nevada; sisters, Patsy Taylor of Black Mountain, North Carolina and Lou Decker of Montreat, North Carolina. She is loved by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Betty is blessed to have her loving nephew and faithful caregiver, Jack Taylor, Jr. of Black Mountain, North Carolina.
