Agnes Irene Mathis, age 98, of Avery, passed away Friday, December 20, 2019, at Ponderosa Nursing Center.
Agnes was born November 30, 1921, in the West Bowie Community to Haywood and Lula Elizabeth Bower Tucker. Agnes had a kind and gentle heart, if she loved you, she would do anything for you. She enjoyed quilting, canning and gardening in her pastime. Agnes loved her family and will be deeply missed. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, John T. Mathis; 3 daughters, Helen Mathis, Kathy Mathis and Marie McSpeeden; her son, Hollis Elliot; 2 grandchildren, Larry and Robin; 1 brother and 2 sisters.
The family will receive friends one hour before service time at the First Baptist Church of Avery.
Funeral services are set for 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 26, 2019, at the First Baptist Church of Avery with Rev. Paul Burkhalter officiating. Burial will follow in West Bowie Cemetery under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.
Survivors include 4 sons, Thomas Wayne Mathis and wife, Shirley of Whitesboro, David Leo Mathis and wife, Della of Forney, Donnie Ray Mathis of Avery and Jimmy D. Mathis and wife Alice of Dekalb; her daughter, Mammie Harris of Dekalb; 11 grandchildren, Kenny, Timmy, Tanya, Margaret, Tina, Donnie, Jr., Bobbie, Elizabeth, Tony, Illa and Kie; 15 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Serving as pallbearers are Jimmy Mathis, Thomas Mathis, Earnest Harrison, Harold Lewis, Wayne Glass and Geoffory Lewis.
